Cyrano de Bergerac

September 2010, White Bear Theatre, Kennington, London

Design : Kate Matthews
Director: Simon Evans
Writer: Edmund Rostand

Focus was given to costume with characters in semi undress to mirror Paris’ sexualised gossip culture. Set in Mid 17th Century, inspiration was taken from other periods of French fashion to emphasise the fun and joyful nature of this performance. Cyrano’s nose is oversized with a suggestion of Comedia Del Arte.

Purity concludes the action with veiled nuns and full, classically inspired dresses.

Cyrano has many locations in Paris including a Hall Theatre, Bakery, Nunnery with both inside and outside spaces. Swathes of grey fabric transform this space into a versatile canvas for lighting and small set pieces whilst hinting on Paris’ less salubrious underbelly.
